EVALUATE THE ANTI-ULCER ACTIVITY OF THE ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF TORENIA CRUSTACEA LEAVES USING SUITABLE EXPERIMENTAL MODELS

ABSTRACT

Background: Gastric ulceration is a common gastrointestinal illness related through oxidative stress, swelling and disturbance of the stomach mucosal barrier. Medicinal plants containing bioactive phytochemicals have attracted attention as potential sources of gastroprotective agents. Objective: The present investigation aimed to investigate the phytochemical composition, gastroprotective potential and antioxidant action of the ethanolic leave extract of Torenia crustacea against ethanol-induced gastric ulceration into experimental animals. Methods: Preliminary phytochemical screening and thin-layer chromatography (TLC) were performed to investigate the chemical ingredients of the extract. Experimental animals has divided into six groups comprising normal control, ulcer control, standard control (ranitidine 50 mg/kg) and three extract-treated groups receiving 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg, respectively. Gastroprotective activity was assessed through ulcer index, percentage gastroprotection, gastric lesion score and lesion area. Oxidative stress markers, MDA, SOD, CAT and GSH, were evaluated. Gastric tissues had been also observed Histopathological. Results: In the illustrative dataset, the extract exhibited a dose-dependent gastroprotective pattern, with ulcer inhibition values of 30.76%, 50.60% and 65.62% at 100, 200 and 300mg/kg, respectively, compared with 74.94% for ranitidine. Increasing extract doses were associated with reduced gastric lesion severity and decreased MDA levels, alongside improvements in SOD, catalase and GSH levels. Representative histopathological illustrations showed progressively better preservation of gastric mucosal architecture at higher extract doses. Conclusion: The illustrative findings suggest that Torenia crustacea ethanolic leaf extract may have gastroprotective and antioxidant potential, possibly associated with its phytochemical constituents. Further experimental validation and identification of active compounds are necessary to establish its therapeutic significance.
