EVALUATION OF ANTIDIABETIC ACTIVITY OF POLYALTHIA LONGIFOLIA SEEDS EXTRACT ON ALLOXAN INDUCED DIABETIC RAT

ABSTRACT

In this research, the Pharmacognostic, Phytochemical, toxicological, and pharmacological potential of seeds from Polyalthia longifolia has been scientifically investigated with special reference to their antidiabetic activity. The aim of present study was to evaluate the potency of antdiabetic activity of seed extract. The P. longifolia seedextract was administered orally in Alloxan induced diabetic rats. However treatment with Polyalthia longifolia seed extract showed substantial improvement in body weight, especially in the medium and high dose groups. Such an improvement indicates a muscle and tissue-protective effect in diabetic conditions, as in the case of the standard treatment with metformin. At four weeks, rats that were given Polyalthia longifolia seed extract had a significant reduction in their fasting blood glucose level. The effect was dose-dependent and the maximum dose (200 mg/kg) had the largest hypoglycemic effect and was comparable to metformin. The lowering of the HbA1c level also established the long-term antidiabetic efficacy of the extract. Decreased HbA1c levels reflect improved glycemic control, lowering the risk of diabetic complications.
