ANTITOXIC REVIEW OF TULASI (OCIMUM SANCTUM LINN.): INTEGRATING AYURVEDIC AGADA TANTRA PRINCIPLES AND CONTEMPORARY BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH

ABSTRACT
Background: Tulasi (Ocimum sanctum Linn., family Lamiaceae), revered as 'The Incomparable One' and the 'Queen of Herbs' in classical Indian medicine, holds a central therapeutic status in Agada Tantra (Ayurvedic Toxicology) as a Vishaghna (antitoxic/antidotal) Dravya. Modern industrial development and environmental degradation continuously expose humans to diverse xenobiotics, heavy metals, synthetic pesticides, and biological toxins. Aim: To systematically review and critically integrate classical Ayurvedic literature and contemporary biomedical research regarding the antitoxic, detoxifying, organoprotective, and immunomodulatory properties of Ocimum sanctum Linn. Methods: Primary Ayurvedic texts (Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Astanga Hridaya, Bhavaprakasha Nighantu, Dhanvantari Nighantu) were thoroughly analyzed alongside contemporary peer-reviewed scientific databases (PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science) using key search parameters including 'Ocimum sanctum', 'Tulsi', 'antitoxic', 'Vishaghna', 'heavy metal toxicity', 'pesticide detoxification', and 'snake venom neutralization'. Findings: Classical Ayurvedic literature categorizes Tulasi within the Surasadi Gana and assigns to it Katu-Tikta Rasa, Laghu-Ruksha Guna, Ushna Veerya, and Katu Vipaka, enabling it to counteract Kapha-Vata poisons and acute or latent metabolic toxicities (Garavisha/Dushivisha). Contemporary phytomedical studies confirm that O. sanctum and its major active constituents—including Eugenol, Ursolic Acid, Rosmarinic Acid, Apigenin, and β-Caryophyllene—exert pronounced hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, and radioprotective effects. It upregulates Phase II hepatic detoxification enzymes (GST, SOD, CAT, GSH-Px), activates the Nrf2 signaling cascade, chelates heavy metals (Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, Mercury), neutralizes organophosphate pesticides, and demonstrates significant neutralizing activity against viper and cobra venoms. Conclusion: Ocimum sanctum Linn. demonstrates an exceptional convergence between ancient Ayurvedic Agada Tantra wisdom and contemporary biomedical toxicology, validating its role as a versatile, bio-available natural antitoxic agent for clinical and environmental health applications.
