BARRIERS AND FACILITATORS TO PARTICIPATION IN DISABILITY SPORTS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW
Dr. Pallavi Rai, Dr. Krishnakant, Dr. Ramesh Chand Yadav*
ABSTRACT
Participation in sports offers significant physical, psychological, and social benefits for individuals with disabilities. However, participation rates remain lower than those of non-disabled peers. This systematic review aims to identify and synthesize existing research on the barriers that hinder, and the facilitators that promote, engagement in disability sports. Drawing on peer-reviewed literature published between 2000 and 2024, the review identifies key themes such as accessibility, societal attitudes, policy frameworks, personal motivation, and social support. The findings emphasize the importance of multi-level interventions to increase participation, suggesting directions for policy, practice, and future research.
Keywords: Disability sports, Barriers, Facilitators, Participation, and adaptive sports.
