MOUTH DISSOLVING TABLETS: A PROMISING ALTERNATIVE TO CONVENTIONAL TABLETS
Mr. Dhondge Y. D.*, Mr. Jadhav S.
ABSTRACT
Mouth Dissolving Tablets (MDTs) are advanced oral dosage forms that rapidly break down in the mouth when exposed to saliva, allowing the patient to swallow the medication without water. These tablets have attracted wide interest because they improve convenience, enhance patient adherence, and are especially beneficial for children, elderly individuals, and patients with swallowing difficulties. MDTs provide several advantages, such as faster onset of therapeutic action, the possibility of increased bioavailability for drugs absorbed in the oral cavity, precise dosing, and good stability. Their formulation mainly depends on efficient super disintegrants like cross povidone, croscarmellose sodium, and sodium starch glycolate, which enable quick dispersion on the tongue. The rising preference for user-friendly drug delivery systems and the industry's focus on upgrading existing drugs have further increased the importance of MDTs. Overall, these tablets offer a practical and effective alternative to traditional solid dosage forms, addressing major limitations in oral drug administration.
