ABSTRACT
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that requires long-term medication therapy and continuous lifestyle management. Medication adherence is considered one of the most important factors in achieving effective glycemic control and preventing diabetes-related complications. However, poor adherence to antidiabetic therapy remains a major challenge among diabetic patients due to factors such as lack of knowledge, forgetfulness, financial difficulties, side effects, complex treatment regimens, and poor patient awareness. Educational interventions have emerged as effective strategies for improving medication adherence and enhancing patient outcomes. The present review article focuses on the role of educational interventions in improving medication adherence among diabetic patients. Various educational approaches including patient counseling, pharmacist-led education, lifestyle modification education, mobile reminders, telephonic follow-up, and educational leaflets have been discussed. Published studies have demonstrated that these interventions significantly improve patient knowledge, treatment compliance, glycemic control, and quality of life while reducing diabetes-related complications. The review also highlights the important role of pharmacists and healthcare professionals in patient education and adherence monitoring. In addition, major challenges affecting educational interventions such as low literacy, poor healthcare access, financial barriers, and limited patient motivation have been discussed. Future perspectives including digital health education, mobile health applications, community awareness programs, and advanced pharmacist involvement may further enhance medication adherence and diabetes management. Overall, educational interventions play a vital role in improving medication adherence and promoting better therapeutic outcomes among diabetic patients. Continuous patient education and regular follow-up are essential for effective long-term diabetes management.
