ABSTRACT
Background: Cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy often experience physical, psychological, and social challenges that require support beyond oncology teams. Family physicians are uniquely positioned to provide holistic care by addressing comorbidities, psychosocial needs, and treatment adherence. This study assessed the involvement of family physicians in supporting patients with cancer during radiation therapy. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 200 adult patients receiving radiation therapy in a tertiary hospital setting during 2024. Participants were selected through systematic random sampling. Data were collected using a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire covering sociodemographic characteristics, clinical data, family physician involvement, and patient satisfaction. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26, applying descriptive and inferential statistics with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: The majority of patients were aged 40–59 years (48%) and female (56%). Breast cancer was the most common diagnosis (37%), and over half (54%) of patients were in advanced disease stages. Comorbidities were reported in 63% of participants. Only 30% had regular consultations with family physicians, while 44% reported occasional involvement. The most common support provided was medical care (73%), followed by informational support (58%) and psychological support (52%). Social and family guidance was reported less frequently (39%). Most patients (71%) found family physicians easily accessible. Importantly, 76% stated that family physician supports improved adherence to radiation therapy, and 69% expressed satisfaction with communication. Conclusion: Family physicians play a vital role in supporting patients with cancer during radiation therapy, particularly in ensuring treatment adherence and continuity of care. However, gaps remain in psychosocial and social support. Enhancing collaboration, providing targeted training, and formally integrating family physicians into oncology care pathways are recommended to optimize patient outcomes.
