ABSTRACT
Background: Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder characterized by the development of multiple fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys, often leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and systemic complications such as hypertension. While conventional management focuses on symptom control and delaying progression, complementary approaches like Ayurveda have shown potential in enhancing patient outcomes through holistic interventions. Case Presentation: A 67-year-old male with a known history of Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and hypertension presented with complaints of nausea, hyperacidity, lower limb edema, poor appetite, intermittent constipation, and frothy urine output. The patient had been on antihypertensive medications and supportive allopathic care for years but sought Ayurvedic treatment for additional symptomatic relief and to improve quality of life. Interventions: The Ayurvedic treatment regimen included a personalized combination of Ayurveda formulations having ingredients such as Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris), and Varuna (Crataeva nurvala), etc. to support renal function, along with dietary modifications and lifestyle advice. Panchakarma therapies, including Snehana, Swedana and Matra basti were administered to address vitiated doshas and improve urinary tract function. Allopathic antihypertensive medications, including angiotensin receptor blockers, were continued throughout the treatment to maintain blood pressure control. Outcomes: After integrative treatment, the patient reported significant improvement in symptoms, including reduced hyperacidity, lower limb edema, and fatigue. Renal function parameters, including serum creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), showed stabilization. Blood pressure was consistently maintained within target range. Conclusion: This case highlights the potential role of Ayurveda as a complementary approach in managing PKD, especially in alleviating symptoms and stabilizing renal function alongside standard allopathic care. Further clinical studies are warranted to explore the integrative management of PKD to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
