ABSTRACT
Introduction: Inappropriate use of antibiotics in hospitals is a major contributing factor to the developing worldwide public health concern of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Like many other medical facilities in Jordan and the Middle East, Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein Military Hospital commonly prescribes broad-spectrum antibiotics (such as cephalosporins and carbapenems) empirically without microbiological confirmation, which contributes to the emergence of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). this study aims to Examine the inpatients antibiotic prescribing trends, taking into account the most widely used classes and how well they match the WHO AWaRe categorization. Methodology: Study Design: Retrospective observational study: Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein Military Hospital's pharmacy dispensing records (ledgers) served as the data source for this 12-month study, which ran from January to December 2024.
Results: Antibiotics Aligned with Global Benchmarks:
1. Amoxil Syrup 125mg/5ml
2. Penbritin Vials 500mg
3. Tazocin Vials 4.5gm
4. Crystapen Vials 1M IU
5. Procaine Penicillin Vials 400,000 U
2-Antibiotics Deviating from Global Benchmarks (Statistically Significant Differences)
1. Floxapen Vials 250mg
2. Augmentin Infant Drops
Conclusion: Most antibiotics are used within global norms, However, ceftriaxone shows statistically significant high utilization, requiring urgent stewardship to curb resistance risks, Ceftazidime also warrants monitoring due to borderline significance. These findings emphasizing the need for data-driven prescribing and institutional guidelines.
Keywords: Antimicrobial resistance, pattern use of antibiotics, military hospitals, antibiotics prescribing trend.
