ABSTRACT
Skin and eyes share a common embryological origin from the surface ectoderm, leading to a significant overlap in diseases affecting both. Many dermatological conditions such as herpes, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, leprosy, acne, and seborrheic dermatitis frequently present with ocular complications like conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and keratitis. Preventive measures are essential to mitigate the progression of these conditions to the eyes. Ayurveda provides a holistic approach, and Mukhalepa is highlighted as a preventive and promotive procedure in this context. Classical texts of Ayurveda attribute Mukhalepa with Chakshushya and varnya properties. This article explores the anatomical and physiological connection between facial skin and ocular tissues, the pharmacodynamics of transdermal absorption through lepa, and reviews classical Ayurvedic formulations suitable for various skin disorders with ocular involvement. Specific lepas such as those containing Triphala, Yashtimadhu, Lodhra, Kutaja, Karanja, and Chandana are evaluated for their role in preventing ocular inflammation arising from skin pathologies. Mukhalepa, when practiced as a part of Dinacharya, may serve as an effective preventive measure in maintaining ocular and facial health, especially in inflammatory and infectious skin diseases that may affect vision.
