ABSTRACT
The chronic inflammatory disease known as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) damages joints and causes discomfort, swelling, and reduced mobility. Conventional treatments, including synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs, often result in side effects and limited long-term efficacy. To address these challenges, we formulated and evaluated a herbal gel incorporating extracts of Pongamia pinnata and Nyctanthes arbor-tristis for the treatment of RA and inflammation. The strong analgesic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects of these medicinal herbs are well established. The gel formulation was prepared using a suitable polymer base to ensure effective drug delivery and skin penetration. To improve the formulation, a number of physicochemical factors were evaluated, such as pH, viscosity, spreadability, and stability. Furthermore, utilizing well-established animal models, in vivo anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties were evaluated. The results demonstrated that the herbal gel exhibited superior anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects compared to conventional gels. It significantly reduced paw edema and joint swelling in animal models, indicating effective inhibition of inflammation. The sustained release profile ensured prolonged therapeutic action, minimizing the need for frequent application. Overall, the Pongamia pinnata and Nyctanthes arbor-tristis herbal gel offers a natural and effective approach for managing RA and inflammation. Its enhanced efficacy, safety, and controlled drug release properties highlight its potential as a superior alternative to conventional treatments. Further clinical studies are warranted to validate these findings and facilitate its development for commercial therapeutic use.
