ABSTRACT
Background: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrate of autologous blood growth factors which has been shown to provide some symptomatic relief in early osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. The objective of this study was to measure the clinical outcome measures in Knee osteoarthritis on post PRP injection. Purpose: To determine the effectiveness, in terms of patient reported outcome measures of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in knee osteoarthritis patients. Methodology: This was a prospective observational study done on 86 cases were analyzed after treatment with autologous Platelet Rich Plasma Injections. And an inclusion criteria age between 81 is involved and Radiologic evidence of articular damage (grades 1-3 of Kellgren-Lawrence scale) based on knee Osteoarthritis when injection gives followed by a protocol. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) was given and patient was regularly followed up after analyzed at 10days, 6th weeks, 12th week after the PRP Injection. Final analysis to know the outcome was done at the 12th week follow-up of PRP therapy to avail the results. Outcome analysis was done for the reduction in pain, decrease in stiffness, and improvement in physical function using the WOMAC Scale. The patients were also assessed for reduction in pain using visual analog scale. Results: There was significant improvement in all scores at the 10 days, 6th week and 12th week follow-ups. Then satisfactory to good results with platelet rich plasma therapy for which encouraged us to take up this treatment as one more option along with medical management. Conclusion: Platelet-rich plasma therapy is a simple and minimally invasive intervention which is feasible to deliver in primary care to treat osteoarthritis of the knee joint. PRP can be a safe and effective treatment in patients with OA are needed to measure outcomes, durability of effect and cost effectiveness.
Keywords: Platelet rich plasma, knee osteoarthritis.
