ABSTRACT
Ama literally means "unripe" or "undigested." It is the toxic byproduct of impaired digestion and metabolism. It forms because of "Agnimandya," or weakened digestive fire, whereby partially undigested food and metabolic waste start accumulating. This heavy, toxic substance will vitiate the balance of the "Doshas" (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), the "Dhatus" or the body tissues, and the channels in it (Srotas), which will lead to disease. Ama, according to Ayurveda, is the root of most diseases. The cyclic relation of Ama with Agnimandya reinvolves a vicious cycle of toxicity and weakened digestion, the cause of chronic illness. This very concept forms the basis of diagnosis and treatment of diseases in Ayurveda. This review explains the nature of Ama, its formation, and its main role in the manifestation of disease processes, elaborating on the insights this provides into the management and prevention of such disorders by Ayurvedic practices.
Keywords: Ama, Ayurveda, Agnimandya, Dosha, Dhatu.
